Trying Out Mouthgenics Dental Probiotics For My Oral Microbiome

I always cleaned my teeth twice a day, but adding in flossing or using an interdental brush was something I was reluctant for over the years up until 6 months ago. A dental probiotic is a much easier part of my dental regime to adopt, just popping in a tablet straight after brushing.

As you may have noticed by my recent posts, dental hygiene has become a key interest of mine recently, as I keep studying more about the oral microbiome, how it affects so many things internally and the importance of preventing gums from bleeding.

So Why Use A Dental Probiotic?

MouthgenicsUntil you’ve really researched about the oral microbiome, you really can’t fathom how much of an impact it all has. The diverse microbial community in your oral cavity is being studied in great detail currently and we’re learning more about this area each and every month.

This piece highlights a number of metagenomic studies on the oral microbiome which are worth reading up on. The fact that we’re starting to see exactly which organism is associated with certain factors is fascinating (I’m being careful with my wording so I don’t mention medical terms, Google isn’t a fan otherwise, considering I’m not a dentist).

So back to dental probiotics, the whole concept is around providing specific strains of bacteria which have been found to help support a healthy mouth. You want to encourage this good bacteria to be consistently present in your mouth, as well as lowering the bad bacteria.

You Mention Good Bacteria, Which Ones Are Included?

So the Mouthgenics chewable tablets contain 7 different probiotic strains, highlighted below:

  1. Lactobacillus Acidophillus
  2. Lactobacillus Brevis
  3. Lactobacillus Paracasei
  4. Lactobacillus Reuteri
  5. Lactobacillus Salivarius
  6. Salivarius K12 (BLIS K12TM)
  7. Streptococcus Thermophilu

Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally found in your intestines, while it’s often found in fermented foods & kefir. It has been shown to have good resistance against acid and bile salts and it plays an important role in human health.

Lactobacillus brevis has been shown to inhibit oral pathogens, while Lactobacillus Paracasei has been shown to help reduce gingivitis.

As someone who had suffered with bleeding gums (up until about 5 months ago), this was inevitably an interest of mine.

I won’t deep dive into each bacteria and the potential benefits, but I’ve listed them above in case you want to do your own research. I’ll quickly highlight that I was happy to see Lactobacillus Reuteri included, as I had previously studied this probiotic strain with antimicrobial benefits.

Hamza Kadodia, the founder of Mouthgenics, stated “We created our dental probiotics to address a gap we saw in the market—something better than the existing options, many of which were only available in the US. Our supplement is designed to support a balanced oral microbiome, using clinically studied strains like S. Salivarius K12 and Lactobacillus Reuteri to tackle the root causes of gum disease and bad breath – not just mask the problem. It’s about more than just treating symptoms; it’s about helping people achieve lasting oral health through an effective solution that wasn’t easily accessible before.”

My Experience

So you get 30 in a pack, while you just need one per day, or two for “severe conditions”, but I’ll just go with one.

The peppermint aroma wafts up the moment you pop open the safety seal inside, while it equally tastes minty fresh.

Resting it on the tongue and moving it around the mouth, it dissolved in around 5 minutes, meaning you can carry on doing chores while it slowly disappears.

The best before date was 12/2026, while it arrived at the start of January 2025, meaning a good 2 years, which is great to see. Of course, with 30 in a pack and me taking them once per day, it should be gone in a month, but it’s nice to know I’m not rushed to finish them, as I know we can all be a little inconsistent at times.

I like that it contains other ingredients like xylitol, vitamin D and zinc, all which offer numerous health benefits. I had contemplated making up my own homemade mouthwash with xylitol and peppermint, but I didn’t fancy making a mistake, however this contains those ingredients so I’ll settle for the probiotic!

I’m happy to say I had no bad breath at the end, albeit I hope I had no bad breath at the start of testing. With 8 billion CFU per tablet, I’m happy that it’s packed full of healthy probiotics and hopefully they’ve formed a bigger population in my mouth now (a weird sentence to write).

Unlike the last pack I tested out, this one doesn’t need to be refrigerated, meaning I can keep it in the bathroom, which helps with remembering to take it after brushing.
