If you’ve been following my recent posts, you’ll know that the oral microbiome has become a subject I’m fascinated about, trying to learn everything possible and to correct years of underappreciating my oral health.
My studying and research took me to a British brand that was launched in 2022 by Yulia Allawi, Verity Labs. They have a number of products, from vitamin sprays to night time formulas, but it is the dental probiotics that I’m captivated by.
How Do I Take Them?
So I popped one in my mouth and allowed it to dissolve, which took a few minutes, while I carried on with my daily chores as it rested on my tongue, occasionally moving it around the mouth.
They highlighted that you should take them after brushing your teeth, either once or twice per day, so I used them in the mornings after brushing and occasionally in the evening.
Unlike the dental lozenges I recently tested, the recommendations on the side highlight that you should refrigerate after opening, something I didn’t spot at first so I thought it was worth sharing.
This does mean it’s not in front of you when you brush, so I did have to set a reminder on my phone to pop down to the kitchen before or after brushing to grab one.
What Bacterium Is Present?
There are three key strains in the proprietary blend, which is lactobacillus plantarum, lactobacillus salivarius and streptococcus salivarius.
Lactobacillus plantarum has been shown to promote oral health, while the probiotic consumption has been shown to reduce levels of cariogenic and periodontal pathogens.
Lactobacillus salivarius, a similar sounding probiotic strain, has been shown to potentially modify the oral environment through antagonism to bacteria, while preventing the production of proinflammatory cytokines.
The third strain, streptococcus salivarius, has been shown to inhibit harmful bacteria from living in your mouth, with this study showing the growth of pathogens was reduced in the dental biofilm.
What Else Is Present?
It’s not just the presence of probiotic strains that makes this formula interesting, it’s also the inclusion of zinc and Vitamin D.
Sure, 10 minutes in the sun will provide us with enough Vitamin D we need for the day, but a lot of people have a Vitamin D deficiency and the winter weather means we’re not going out as much as we should do.
Vitamin D can help to regulate the gut microbiota, while we now realise how the gut and oral microbiome are so closely connected (unsurprisingly). It also holds an important role in tooth mineralisation, while low levels can lead to weakened gums and teeth.
Zinc, something I used to take in the form of a ZMA tablet (zinc and magnesium) holds an important role for your immune system. Zinc can help to control plaque and reduce malodour, as well as contributing to the remineralisation of tooth enamel.
How Long Should The Pack Last?
There were 60 tablets in the pack, so it depends if you take 1 or 2 per day, or if you just plan on occasionally taking it. You can of course pay for a subscription, which will cost less per month than simply doing a one-time purchase.
In regards to life expectancy, on the pack I was sent, the best before date is on the base, showing 22/05/2026, meaning about 18 months from it arriving, plenty of time on the watch!
Why Make The Investment?
You may look at the product page, see £25 and think ‘why don’t I just brush and floss’. Well sure, you should absolutely brush and floss every single day. You should also go to the hygienist regularly.
But the reality is that you have billions of microbiomes in your mouth, both good and bad, which hold huge amounts of influence on your overall health, so if there is a way to both reduce the dangerous ones and increase the healthy microbiota, then I certainly would want to take action.
As Verity Labs state, the probiotics introduce healthy bacteria which colonises in the mouth and inhibits the growth of bad bacteria which causes inflammation and cavities.
