Efamol Efalex Brain Formula Liquid Review

I’m incredibly successful at eating healthily. I eat 2 portions of fruit per day and around 8 portions of vegetables. I have a sister who is a qualified nutritionist, while both myself and my other sister spent a huge portion of our life obsessed with the subject. But my one weakness has always been getting Omega 3 into my diet.

The main reason was due to my dislike of fish. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind a tin of tuna, but the omega 3 is completely gone from that tin! I once bought omega 3 capsules, but I couldn’t swallow them as they were massive. I spent a year forcing myself to take cod liver oil as a liquid, but no human should ever go through that torture!

So when faced with the opportunity to review the Efamol Efalex Brain Formula Liquid, I was incredibly curious, so read on to learn more.

Why Do We Need Omega 3?

Omega 3 has a number of important health benefits. From improving eye health to fighting inflammation, omega 3 should be a key consideration in our diet, but this product is rightly titled ‘brain formula’ for a reason.

There is early evidence that omega 3 can help promote healthier brain cells, as well as protecting against deterioration of the brain.

We all fear getting older and one key aspect of this is around Alzheimer’s disease or other age related mental decline issues. However, the internet is filled with studies connecting the addition of omega 3 and the reduction of mental decline health issues. Or more accurately, the lack of omega 3 in the diet being a potential reason.

But if you want a real world comparison, compare both the life expectancy and mental state of people in Japan versus either the UK or the USA. The Japanese life expectancy is 84 years old, compared to 81 years in the UK. 63% are obese in the UK, compared to 3.2% in Japan! Yet most importantly, 1 in 14 people over the age of 65 in the UK suffer from Alzheimer’s, whereas in Japan that figure is approximately 1 in 25 people

Can’t You Get Omega 3 From Nuts & Seeds?

The important step when looking at omega 3 is to break it up, as there are three main forms of omega 3.

While the body can produce almost everything it needs itself (albeit it needs a top-up from our diet), this isn’t the case for omega-3 fatty acids, which makes them even more important to our diet.

EPA, or Eicosapentaenoic acid, helps by creating eicosanoids, which are critical for various physiological roles in the body. These are mostly found in fatty fish, which we lack in our Western diets. If you want to get this naturally, you should try eating more herring, shrimp, salmon or eel.

If you’re a vegan, you can also get this from seaweed and algae, but I can’t stand the taste!

The next omega 3 fatty acid is DHA, or docosahexaenoic acid, which can be crucial for a number of conditions, from high blood pressure to arthritis. It’s also critical for brain development in childhood, highlighting its connection to the brain.

Again, you can find large amounts of DHA in fatty fish and algae.

The third omega 3 polyunsaturated fat is ALA, or alpha-linolenic acid. We have plenty of this in our Western diet from the things we eat, such as nuts and oils, as well as plant foods. You could be getting easily enough from your healthy diet if you’re eating spinach, soy and flax seeds. The body then can convert it into EPA and DHA.

So what’s the issue?

The issue is that the body is absolutely useless at converting ALA into EPA, while it’s even worse at converting to DHA. Considering the importance of EPA and DHA, this means you cannot rely on the ALA you’re eating. Brands constantly advertise the high amounts of Omega 3 they have in their product, not really covering the fact that it’s ALA and isn’t helping you to reach those lower figures of EPA and DHA.

Unless you eat a diet rich in fish or algae, this is where a supplement such as Efamol Efalex brain formula liquid comes in.

How Does It Taste?

You know what, I was nervous. I’ve mentioned how I used to have to drink cod liver oil and it tasted like hell.

But lo and behold, I’ve found a perfect resource for my omega 3 consumption! It tasted of sunflower seeds with a citrus hint in what was actually quite a nice taste. I wasn’t expecting it at all. I then had a quick look over the packaging and saw it stated it was lemon and lime flavoured, which made more sense and eased the nerves around whether I was going to get a fishy taste.

Does This Reach My Daily Requirement?

Look it up on Google and you will have 100 different answers on the required dosage of EPA and DHA per day. This is partly due to the fact that it depends on your gender, your weight and your age. This is before you consider each country sets out different nutritional guidelines.

In general, you need a combined quantity of EPA and DHA of around 250-500mg. A quick show on the back of this product highlights that you get 280mg of DHA and 70mg of EPA within a 10ml dosage, which combines to make up 350mg.

What Sources Do They Use In The Brain Formula Liquid?

This product combines a mix of fish oil and evening primrose oil. This provides you with both omega 3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) as well as omega 6 fatty acids (GLA and AA). You will also find a presence of Vitamin E, sunflower oil and thyme oil, plus tocopherol rich extract antioxidant.

    1. ah sorry to hear. I’m in the same boat, I’ve always struggled with memory loss. I do strongly believe a lack of omega 3 can have an effect, especially as I’ve skipped fish from my diet for most of my life. I’m giving this a go, but whether it helps in the long run or not is still to be seen. I hope you find the product that works for you
